There are many more complete wine and food calendars on the web but our goal is to post those events that appear to over-deliver for the ticket price. The key factors that affect our decisions (having spent over 20 years attending such events) include attending principals, the quality of the food and wine, the location and the chance to learn something new. |

July 21, 2008. Welcome back to gismondionwine.com. Summer is heating up in Canada and we are doing our best to cool you down with wine reviews you can use in the heat. Remember to make sure the white wines you are drinking are not too cold and the reds are not too hot. If necessary, have your local restaurant put that red wine on ice for a few minutes to get it to cellar temperature. The International Value Wine Awards wrapped up in Calgary last month and you can look forward to the October/November edition of Wine Access for complete result. Wine Access is currently soliciting Canadian wine producers to enter their latest wines in the 2008 Canadian Wine Awards to be held this September in Penticton, British Columbia. We have posted dozens of new reviews this month with more to come on Canada’s number one wine review website. ag |

| Warm Reds, Cold Nights and other Wine Nightmares |
The problem is that too many buyers have spent the winter studying the soil structure of some obscure French appellation or perhaps the difference between superiore, supérieur or umpteen other obscure wine laws designed to equip you with mostly esoteric information that makes you feel accomplished but won't help you much if the white wine is warm and red wine is even warmer. full article...

| Summer Sipping Made Simple |
The idea that wine is simple is a non-starter with me, unless you think history, science, biology, geography, geology, farming, sales and marketing and running a tourist business are simple. While drinking wine may be a simple act, so is listening to music, but learning something about either requires study and contemplation. full article...

| Twisted Palates Go For Sauvignon Blanc |
If wine writers and sommeliers have much to do with it, over-oaked, soft, fat chardonnay with a kiss of residual sugar will be ignored, and it's going to happen fast. My guess is oaky chardonnay selling for less than $25 and bottled under cork will be almost impossible to sell in any front-line restaurant or wine shop by the end of the year. Such is the speed of change. full article...

| Hurrah Syrah |
History tells us that syrah is one of the oldest established grapes in France, but its origins are less apparent and there is plenty of speculation as to its source. Some claim it came to Marseilles, France around 600 BC via the Phocaeans of Asia Minor, who in turn are said to have imported the grape from Shiraz, Persia. full article...

| 10 Wines Under $10 |
Despite the advent of "two-buck Chuck" and its many imitators in the U.S., quality wine that sells for less than $10 Canadian dollars is pretty much extinct. In fact, in the case of authentic grown in Canada wine it is nearly impossible to find anything under $10 that is worth drinking. Taxes are the number one culprit along with some less than shrewd purchasing by the monopolies. That said here are ten wines with taste that will save you some money and satisfy large crowds. full article...

| Ultra Cool Chardonnay |
Just about the time the world is supposed to be tired of drinking chardonnay, the globe's best producers are refining their style. Drier more complex cool, even fruity with much less obvious oak. It's the future and it's coming fast. full article...

Tasting wine takes you to many places, both hotels and restaurants - some good, some great and some bad. In response to many requests I will begin posting some basic details on where to stay and eat in wine country or wine friendly cities but only if I have first hand experience. Take it for what it is: a personal opinion but one that is based on many years of travel. |

| Frozen Drops of Honey |
Cold, harsh winter weather has always benefited wine growers in this country if only because it acts as the perfect, natural pesticide but today freezing temperatures that blanket our vineyards each winter yield a much richer reward - icewine. full article...
